Why Send a Birthday Greetings Card?

Happy Birthday greeting cards are a good way to keep in touch and to connect with family, friends and work colleagues.

For the recipient just knowing that someone took the time to remember your birthday and choose a card for you means a lot.

The birthday greeting card is your way of telling someone that you want to make their special day a happy one and the card gives you a chance to send them your wishes. If you haven’t seen the person for a long time or can’t get together very often then this is a great way of keeping in touch and letting the person know that you are thinking of them even if you can’t be there with them.

The birthday card becomes a keepsake to treasure for years to come in memory your kind thoughts and wishes.

There are many different types of birthday cards. You can buy cards with the age number on them or go for a funny card. If you want to you can use a card with a pre-printed message or verse on the inside or you can use a card which is blank on the inside and write your own greeting. Cards can be handmade. There are also e-cards available on the internet which you can email to your family and friends.

Most birthday cards come with an envelope and the traditional way to send a birthday card is by postal mail. It is always exciting to receive something in the mailbox which isn’t a bill or junk mail. If you are able to see the person on the day then you can give them the card personally.

What to Write in a Birthday Card

This is a question that gets asked very often. Many people choose to buy a card which includes a greeting or a verse or a funny joke – then they just sign their name. But what if you want more than that and you really want to make it personal, what do you write?

1. Keep it simple.

2. Wish them a Happy Birthday and all the best for the year ahead.

3. If you want to write something a bit more personalised you can mention something about a previous birthday, or include a quote.

4. Just remember to be yourself and write down what you would like to say – nobody expects you to be a poet.

We all know how great it is to receive a birthday card, which says something a little more personal from the sender.

These days with so many birthday cards to choose from it is so easy to choose one with a pre-printed message and just scribble your signature inside of it. This is okay especially if the message truly says what you want to say but it is better if you can also write a short message yourself.

A handwritten personal message shows that you took a little more time and put in a bit more effort into your message before you sent out the card.

Writing something more than just “Happy Birthday” isn’t always easy for some of us. Here are a few tips to help you find the right words to write inside a birthday card.

1. Keep in mind that your personalised message does not have to be a long one to be effective and to show that you put some thought into it. A sentence or two is enough.

2. Think about who you are writing the greeting to. What is your relationship with them? Are they your best friend/sister/mother/daughter? You can start by mentioning the relationship in your opening sentence. This will already personalise your birthday card even if you don’t write too much more. Here are a couple of examples:

Happy Birthday Amanda, the best Sister ever!

Happy Birthday to my special, caring, loving Mum.

2. You can include a birthday quote, poem or verse. If you don’t know any then the best way to find one is by searching the internet. Here are a couple of examples:

The older the fiddler, the sweeter the tune. (English proverb)

Roses are red.
Violets are blue.
Lots of birthday hugs and kisses
I send with this card to you.

3. If you can think of something funny or a special memory relating to a previous birthday you can mention it too.

4. End the birthday message by wishing them a good day and/or best wishes for the year before signing off with your name.

5. Remember that no one expects you to be a poet (unless you are one). Just be yourself and you will find it easier to think of something to write.

By taking the extra time to personally write a message inside your birthday cards it is likely that your cards will be kept for the message because they will be meaningful and touch the heart of the people you are giving them to. After all – they are greeting cards so it is the greeting inside that should be special and thoughtful.
